Tabora Airport up for improvements

Tabora Airport for improvements this financial year (Uwanja wa ndege wa Tabora kuboreshwa mwaka huu wa fedha)

DAR ES SALAAM, TANZANIA-Tanzania in collaboration with donors has allocated a tune of $67.5million for construction of airports in this financial year. According to the Minister for Transport Hon. Omari Nundu (MP) the task of preparing the comprehensive plan for civil aviation for the next year will provide suggestion on how to deliver services.

Nundu said that the construction of the airport will work to improve infrastructure, a move which will help the industry to meet the required demand. Airports that have been given first priority in the first instance under the said project, according to Minister Nundu includes the Kigoma, Mafia, Mpanda, Tabora, Songwe, Singida, Mwanza, Arusha, Msalato and Bukoba Airports.
Presenting his ministry budget for the financial year 2011/12 in Dodoma recently, Mr. Nundu said that feasibility study of the Kigoma, Tabora and Shinyanga airports has already been completed.
He said the construction of Songwe International Airport was going on well and the new airport is expected to be completed in December this year.

“At the moment,” he said “the engineers are working on developing and building the passengers building, fire station, aircraft navigation station, placement of asphalt on road landing and flying airplanes which go with construction of other compounds.

Tanzania Airports Authority has completed a feasibility study and design of Msalato Airport with the support of the Arab Bank for Africa Development (BADEA), while at the same time the process of compensating residents living in the area is undergoing.
Mr. Nundu told the Parliament that the government is in discussions with development partners and financial institutions like Arab Bank for Africa Development (BADEA) and the African Development Bank (ADB) to get money for construction of a compound that costs about $105 million.
“Among these actors, African Development Bank has shown interest in providing long-term loan for construction the park,” he said.

About the Bagamoyo international airport, Mr. Nundu said that the feasibility study and the designing of the airport in the magnitude of 8000 hectares has completed and the construction of the airport could commence in the year 2012-2013.
He further said that the construction of Bukoba, Mpanda, Tabora, Kigoma, Arusha, Mafia Airports will start in 2011-2012 being covered by the same project. Meanwhile, “my ministry is still seeking funds that will see the construction of Shinyanga and Sumbawanga Airports,” he noted.
The ministry for transport has tabled a total of $.158 million (Tsh 237 billion) for the fiscal year 2011-2012 budget.
In another development, Tanzania is expected to receive $ 250m loan from the consortium of Tanzanian-banks led by Stanbic for infrastructure.
